Yes, that's one plausible reason. Squids have larger nerve fibers instead of the myelin sheaths to make up for the speed of neural signaling. As a result, their nerve fibers take up more space for the same number of neurons/nerve fibers. And a larger body size would be needed to accommodate large nerve fibers.
