Yes, sometimes the virus is short-lived especially in people with a strong immune system. But once the virus alters the targeted genes,

“These genes then become cross-regulated and sustain their upregulation, even in the absence of Adv36.”

In my opinion, Adv36 initiate a cascade that is hard to revert. Not to mention that the chronic inflammation sustained by Adv36 also suppress the immune system.
