That's a good question. I'm not an expert on how immunity wanes, but I think immunity and lymph node storage are related.

For instance, a study (link below) found that spike-binding antibodies persist in the lymph nodes for at least 12 weeks after getting the mRNA vaccine, even though those antibodies were no longer detectable in the blood after 3 weeks.
