RCT stands for randomized controlled trial, where participants that met inclusion criteria are split randomly into two (or more) groups: one intervention (mask) and one control (usual practice) group.

Such randomization controls for differences in characteristics between groups, so that the trial results are purely based on the intervention rather than other factors.
