Not sure about other cultures, but Asian parents always say freelancing isn't a real job because of this. But I'm lucky enough to have my mom changed her mind (just a bit, I think) based on my earnings history that's not always consistent. Still, even a real job doesn't pay well either, at least for most jobs here.
