Hmm, I'm not sure actually. I'm not aware of any lab-manipulated virus that had initiated an epidemic to draw any inferences from.

That said, if the gain of function experiment was performed on an existing virus, rather than a virus created from scratch, I think it will still behave like a natural virus (if natural means the normal behavior of viruses, like virus replication and transmission).
